Beaver
I to just got a new student in my class last week and he has been absent 3 days already. He was in class when we wrote a bio poem and wrote that he had a lot of siblings. When I didn't comment on his siblings, he asked me if I wanted to know. Well... BIG mistake. He began telling me more than I ever wanted to know! Here I want my student to learn math, reading, writing and all this time, he is trying to get a handle on his family.

It is sad to say but we are not only teachers but a surrogate parent to these kids as well. There are days when I get so frustrated. I have to take a step back and ask myself "what else can I do for this child"? After all, sometimes we are all they have.
ReplyDeletePerhaps just by being there and listening, he got this "knowledge" off his chest and can now focus better on class content.
